The Aquila 23U is a New Nylgut string set for baritone ukulele in GCEA tuning with a high G, pitched G4-C4-E4-A4 in Aquila's notation. All four strings are plain (unwound) New Nylgut, the synthetic material Aquila developed in its own laboratory to give a singing, gut-like tone with clear attack.

Like gut, New Nylgut can be cut by sharp edges, so Aquila advises checking that the nut and bridge are smooth before fitting. The strings take time to settle fully; pulling each one firmly sideways and retuning, until it holds pitch, speeds this up. For DGBE baritone tuning, Aquila's New Nylgut set is the 21U.
